Reader Question: “Is this paydayloan email a scam?”

July 2nd, 2009 by Rick in Uncategorized

Worried Reader: “I got an email the other day about something called a paydayloan. It said that I could get as much as $1000 by clicking on this link and filling out a simple form online, and I wouldn’t have to pay it back until I got paid again from my job. It sounded tempting but when I went to the link the form that came up was asking for a lot of personal information so I thought better of it. Is this paydayloan email a scam?”

Dear Worried Reader,

If this is an unsolicited e-mail you should certainly suspect it as a phishing scam. Phishing is a way of presenting a fraudulent business as a legitimate one in order to steal your sensitive personal information. That being said, there are many perfectly legitimate businesses online that can provide the kind of cash advance service described.

On the company website there should be a link that says something like ‘Contact Us’, this will provide you with a business address that you can use to check on the company. By checking with the Better Business Bureau in the city where the company is located, you will be able to find out if there have been any complaints about this business. Also make sure that any form you fill out online is protected with Secure Sockets Layer; you will be able to tell this because the padlock icon in the lower left corner of your browser should show that it is locked, and the start of the web address should say ‘https:’

In short, do not respond to an unsolicited e-mail like this. You should be able to easily locate a cash advance broker online that can help you find a ‘paydayloan’ to best meet your circumstances.
